Eric had come across the opportunity with KFW when he began searching for internships as a junior at UTSA. He is currently working to obtain his PE license in June of next year. For Eric, one of the best parts of his job is having the ability to pass on the knowledge he's learned over the past 5 years to the interns and young EITs we have here at the office.
Position: Assistant Project Manager
Years at KFW: 5 Years
Favorite part about working at KFW: "One thing I have enjoyed in being a part of KFW is that the company believes in each of their employees. At KFW, I have been continuously given the opportunity to develop and challenge myself with varying tasks and assignments since I began my internship. This has helped expand my knowledge and shaped me into the professional I am today."
Why did you choose civil engineering?
During my senior year in high school, I took an environmental science course which included infrastructure and sustainability topics. I was hooked. While searching different career paths, I found that civil engineering aligned not only with my interest in the field but also my desire to make a difference in my community. I consider myself lucky to work in a field that I enjoy.
What do you like most about this field?
My favorite part about being a Civil Engineer has been the work itself, and I enjoy seeing the construction of the different projects that I have been a part of over the years. No two projects are the same and each provides a different set of challenges. These challenges require you to collaborate and innovate with other engineers as well as individuals with differing skillsets. Knowing the time and hard work required to complete a project makes it incredibly rewarding to see a site constructed as it is designed.
What are your hobbies outside of work?
I have always enjoyed staying physically active. I run and lift weights in addition to participating in other sports. One of my favorites is mountain biking which I have been doing for some time now. Best places to ride are Leon Creek and Flat Rock Ranch!
Any advice for aspiring professionals?
For any student pursuing a degree in engineering, I definitely would recommend getting an internship. Understanding how engineering concepts are applied in the real world gives students a better grasp of the topics they learn in the classroom. It also allows students to understand the day to day of different engineering disciplines.
How would you explain Civil Engineering to a teenager?
Civil engineering can cover a wide range of disciplines but simply put, it is the design, construction and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment.
Eric's co-workers at KFW said the following:
“Eric is progressing in his career in a very positive way. He is intelligent, responsible, and has been a main driving force on our team to get things done quickly and accurately.” ”
“Eric has shown great leadership as an assistant project manager. He is always willing to help, whether it be for our team, or someone else's.” ”
A glimpse into Eric's life
Eric values his family, his fitness, and his travels. Most recently, he and his girlfriend took a trip to Seattle, Washington, where they visited Chihuly Garden and Glass. Eric also enjoys exploring while riding a mountain bike. One of his favorite spots to ride his mountain bike is Flat Rock Ranch. In addition, Eric values his family very highly. The majority of his father's family resided in the Dominican Republic, where he just attended his grandmother's 100th birthday celebration.
