Jeremy Garza - Employee Spotlight
Jeremy Garza has been exposed to the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction industry all of his life. His father, the owner of an irrigation and design company, introduced Jeremy to the world of AutoCAD at the age of sixteen. Inspired by his father's work ethic, Jeremy told his wife, Nancy, "I will work for an engineering company one day." With his manifestations coming to fruition, Jeremy has excelled in his role as a CAD Technician and is currently working to become a Designer.
Since starting at KFW, Jeremy has enjoyed the fast-paced atmosphere, his ability to maintain a healthy work/life balance and is thankful to work with his collaborative team.
Position: CAD Tech
Years at KFW: 8 Months
Favorite part about working at KFW: The great work/life balance, and the team camaraderie.
Before working at KFW, what was the most unusual or interesting job you've ever had?
I used to be a mechanical designer for Phillips lighting in San Marcos, Texas. My position was “Product Engineer” and in this position, I would take existing outdoor light fixtures, take out the guts, and figure out a way to retrofit new LED lighting. I would design light fixtures, have them built, put everything together, then have them tested for weather conditions. It was pretty fun.
What are your hobbies outside of work?
Outside of work, I try to be a musician. I play saxophone for my band Rat King Cole. I started it with my friends and my brother in 2013 as a way for us to hang out and do something semi-productive. Special thanks to my wife, Nancy, for putting up with the loud music.
When you were younger, what was your dream job, and how does that compare now?
When I was young, I actually wanted to be an architect, then I wanted to be a landscape architect, and then a musician. My dad has his own business “Garza Consulting” where he does irrigation design and consulting. He taught me AutoCAD at around 16 and that’s when I just wanted to design everything. I’ve had my hand in different professions, but Civil has been the most interesting career.
Do you have a favorite quote?
When I worked for my Dad, he would tell me “if you broke it/messed up, you fix it.” I know it’s not much of a quote, but it has stayed with me for the longest time. It reminds me that I need to own up to my mistakes and that there are ways to resolve certain issues.
The other is “I need to process it” which I got from my wife. It reminds me that it's okay if I can’t fix things right away. Simply step back and process the situation before moving forward.
If you could choose one song to play every time you walk in the room for the rest of your life, what song would you choose and why?
In my youth, my theme song would be So Fresh, So Clean by Outkast. Mainly because I was young, in decent shape, and dressed nice. Now it’s Shakey Ground by Fishbone because life can be good, but it can knock you down from time to time.
Jeremy's co-workers at KFW said the following:
“Jeremy is the most dependable person I know. He is always eager to help out and he finishes his tasks extremely fast. He's also a great person to be admired!” ”
“Jeremy is also ready to jump in and learn new things. He is quick to ask clarifying questions to keep work running smoothly.” ”
“Jeremy is a very hard worker and is not scared to ask questions. He is dedicated to get work done.” ”
