Courtney Sackett, EIT - Employee Spotlight

As a proud Aggie, Courtney first discovered KFW at the Texas A&M SEC Career Fair. After interviewing and touring the KFW Headquarters, Courtney has earned the title of KFW's first female Assistant Project Manager. She is currently working towards getting her four years of experience to apply for the PE License to become a licensed Civil Engineer.
Why did you choose civil engineering?
I chose a career in engineering because I loved math, science, and problem solving. I had an incredible teacher in high school who was a retired engineer who encouraged me to pursue engineering because she saw my potential. My dad also works in engineering and helped me decide Civil Engineering would be the perfect fit. I wanted to use my creative and analytical nature to make a difference in people’s everyday lives and working as a Civil Engineer allows me to do that every day.
What do you like most about civil engineering?
I like seeing the tangible results of the projects I work on. It is rewarding to see the projects come to life that you put hours of hard work and dedication into during design and construction. I like the versatility and challenges of the job and that there is always room to grown and learn more every day.
What would you tell yourself at age 13?
I would tell myself to not be afraid to pursue a male dominated career. You will run into many people along the way who will doubt you and your capabilities but continuing to work hard and persevere amidst the challenges will only help you grow and break the barriers of females in the civil engineering industry.
Any advice for the aspiring civil engineer?
Apply for internships. It is useful to have real-world knowledge of the industry, the programs we use, and also helps you decide which discipline of Civil Engineering you want to work in.
Never be afraid to ask questions. We are always learning in this field and it will help you tremendously throughout your career if you learn to ask questions.
Find a mentor. Communication is very important so don’t forget to continue to develop your soft skills.
What is your goal while working at KFW?
My goal while working at KFW is to attain my PE License and grow the female representation of Civil Engineers in this industry.
