Omar is a proud graduate of Texas A&M University in College Station. He grew up on the south side of San Antonio and graduated from Harlandale High School, after which he fervently sought to pursue his passion for education graduating from A&M with Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering.
Why did you choose civil engineering?
Engineering in general is always what I wanted to do. I looked at all of the engineering tracts, and I knew civil engineering would suit me best because there is always a new challenge to take on.
What do you like most about civil engineering?
Street design and drainage design are my favorite especially underground drains because it’s more of a challenge. You model and design the storm sewer network using Hydraflow Storm Sewers, an extension of AutoCAD 2015 Civil 3D, and run the analysis to explore design alternatives, locate interferences, and calculate important variables, such as the systems capacity for runoff. If it doesn’t have the capacity, the water backs up and may flood the surrounding properties. If it is has too much, you’re wasting money.
What are you hobbies outside of work?
I like cars—working on cars, fixing cars. I’ve always been very curious about how things operate, electronics and stuff, so I like to take them a part and see how they work. Then, I put them back together. I also like Legos.
What would you tell yourself at age 13?
Life gets harder. Also, the $1.58 billion jackpot lottery numbers for the January 13, 2016 Powerball are 4-8-19-27-34 – Powerball 10.
Any advice for aspiring civil engineers?
Learn AutoCAD while you’re in school. Balance your life with extracurricular activities, and gain leadership skills through student organizations.

I nominated Omar for the Employee Spotlight because he exhibits leadership among his residential team. He has recently taken the initiative to pursue his master’s degree and has encouraged his team members and other KFW employees to do the same.
